The article presents aspects of ongoing research on processes of inclusion and exclusion among adolescents in vocation- al training groups. Referring to her experiences in the field, the author addresses the difficulties of adult researchers in finding an adequate, socially accepted role in the school environment and points to the possibilities of using role interferences as a tool for analysis and understanding. Furthermore, the article describes students’ strategies in acquiring at least some degree of control over the institutionally defined space of school.
