This analysis of web cam pictures takes as its object three realities of the image: the reality the image refers to, the reality of the observer, and the reality of the image itself, its material reality. More interesting than the reality behind the images is our fantasy, namely the reality of the observer. A short history of the voyeuristic gaze describes the relation between looking and being looked at through web cams. The reality of the image itself is immaterial; it consists of pixels, i.e. of bits and bytes. An Internet art project emphasizes the materiality of the web cam image and calls its contents into question.
